Corner Peels and Virtual Reality

Recently, I have come across a few more new types of online advertising: corner peels and virtual reality.

As I’ve come to understand them, virtual reality ads depend heavily on the use of tablets and smart phones. The idea behind it is to bring to life a normally dull, print advertisement. Through the use of a designated application a smart phone or tablet such as the iPad can animate an otherwise static ad on a page. This technology and idea can be best illustrated in this ad. Amazing, huh?

The second ad type is called a corner peel. Although it’s been seen before, I’ve recently come across it and began the push to incorporate it at The State News as a novel product idea. The best part about a corner peel is that it does not block content (which is great for everybody!) but still allows a viewer to become engaged and called to action. A corner peel can look something like the one in the top right corner of the Amazon homepage.

These are two new ads that I am trying to push for The State News. I’ve enjoyed learning more about them, and hopefully we can all see some online at statenews.com soon!

New Product Development

On Thursday of last week, the managers of each department at The State News convened to talk about new product development, among other things. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the general direction of our business, where we can improve and where we can reduce. I excitedly went into this meeting with many new ideas for advertising promotions among other things. In an effort to keep our thoughts in check, we all received sticky notes on which we could write our ideas. Once our ideas were translated to the paper, we stuck our sticky notes under corresponding categories of departments within the business. Although most of mine fell under ‘advertising’ because that’s what I’m familiar with, many of the other department leaders had great insight and suggestions.

Among some of the suggestions were the possibilities of interstitial ads and pre-roll ads. An interstitial ad is an online ad that takes over the screen before the website can be fully presented. The benefits for the advertiser are pretty obvious, complete takeover of a website, which provides an unavoidable encounter with a brand or product. The next ad idea was the pre-roll ad. This is pretty self-explanatory: an animated (video) ad that rolls before the content of another video. Again, this is unavoidable and therefore priceless to the advertiser.

This begins the long list of encounters I’ve hadat The State News that will continue to benefit me immensely in my career. The information I learn at work will be invaluable after I graduate and get a job at an agency.
